Fire Update

FullSizeRenderSeptember 23, 2014

Today’s 41t Annual Grey Bears Harvest Picnic offered everyone a chance to step away from the restoration and planning of the post-fire thrift store, and just enjoy a beautiful day in the park. 1,400 amazing people in our beloved community got together for some good food, music, connecting…and of course dancing.

FullSizeRender-2Special thanks to Capitola City Councilmember, Grey Bears supporter and nurse, Stephanie Harlan who stepped in to help an attendee who had fallen. All turned out well. Thanks to everyone who volunteered, donated and attended yet another super fun annual picnic!

Our amazing thrift store volunteers have moved and restocked the new building with a huge selection of housewares, clothing and medical supplies. Don’t miss the incredible values in housewares, furniture, tumbled glass, art, bikes and more.

clothingWe’re also in the process of moving books and media into a new larger space that will be open next week. Contractors are submitting bids for the removal of the one area destroyed by the fire, and the board and I will begin work on a strategic and facilities plan immediately. We may be burned out, but we’re fired up! Come and shop!

store-prepAs most of you now know, a fire swept through Grey Bears thrift store receiving and housewares buildings on Sunday afternoon, September 7. Firefighters contained the blaze but not before that area was rendered beyond repair. Thankfully no one was hurt and other areas of the thrift store – clothing, medical equipment, books, media, and computer electronics buildings were untouched.

The area outside the burned buildings has now been cleaned up. PG&E restored power yesterday and our volunteer tech crew has done a work-around to restore internet services to the store and offices in that portion of the campus. An incredible cadre of volunteers have moved housewares next store to the clothing building which opens on Saturday. Thanks to an outpouring of support from you, our community, we continue to receive an array of household and office donations that will fill the store for this Saturday’s 1/2-off sale from 10am-3pm.

The Thrift Store receiving and drop-off collection will move to the recycling drop off area, and the new books and media store will open next week. All other operations – brown bag program, recycling center and e-waste drop-off – are all open normal hours. Many of you have asked what you can do to help. Your donations are needed now to help us with the rebuilding process. On behalf of everyone here at Grey Bears and our entire membership, thank your for your confidence and support!
